Acne Scars

The effects of acne often last long after it has cleared, manifesting as acne scars on the skin’s surface or deeper layers. This complication of acne is more prevalent if you suffer from nodules or cysts. Pinching or picking at your spots also significantly increases the chances of acne scarring. With Cardiff Cosmetic Clinic, you no longer have to deal with this stubborn skin condition because we specialise in the best, most effective acne scar removal treatments.

What are Acne Scars?

Acne scars are indentations in the skin that result from damaged tissue caused by acne. They can vary in width, depth, and shape, appearing as narrow or wide, shallow or deep, and either round, oval, or resembling craters. The most common types of acne scars include:

Pitted or indented acne scars: These scars create deep holes on the skin’s surface that are narrow, small, and resemble enlarged pores. They are also called  “ice pick scars” due to their resemblance to small punctures made by a sharp object.

Rolling acne scars: This type of acne scarring causes the skin to appear uneven, with a rolling and undulating texture. It is characterised by shallow and wide depressions under the skin’s surface.

Boxcar acne scars: These are round or oval depressions, resembling craters. They are shallow to medium in depth and have well-defined edges. Boxcar acne scars are most commonly found across the cheeks .

What causes Acne scarring?

Acne-causing bacteria can severely impact your skin, damaging its structure and follicle wall. Any acne spot has the potential to result in scarring, but it’s more likely to occur with moderate or severe acne when spots burst and injure the skin. This causes inflammation, triggers the natural wound healing process, and prompts the skin to repair itself by producing new collagen.

The excess collagen leads to the formation of scar tissue.
