Gummy Smile

Some experts estimate that gummy smiles affect about 10% of the population, with women showing higher percentages than men. While a gummy smile might be a biological condition, it can have adverse social consequences. People with overexposed gums may feel discouraged to smile for fear of revealing their gummy smile, inhibiting their quality of life. If this sounds familiar, rest assured we have an industry-led treatment that can address your problem, leaving you with a carefree snazzy smile.

What is a Gummy Smile?

A gummy smile is a term used to describe overexposed gum tissue above the top teeth when smiling or talking. In medical terms, it’s referred to as excessive gingival display. There is no set definition of what qualifies as overexposed gums as it’s mainly based on perception. But studies have found that around 3mm or more of gum exposure is considered gummy.

What causes a Gummy Smile?

Several factors can cause a gummy smile in the majority of cases, it’s hereditary and not something developed with age. Some causes include teeth that are too short compared to the gums, gums that are enlarged – known as – gingival hypertrophy, a hyperactive upper lip that lifts too high when talking or smiling revealing more of the gum than needed, or an upper lip that is too short. In some cases, an overgrowth of the upper jaw may also cause the gums to look larger than usual.
