Igniting the conversation: Men, anti-ageing and the rise of radio frequency treatments

Published On: 17th September, 2022 | Category: Advice & Tips

Mainstream media will have you believing that anti-ageing procedures are largely reserved for women as if the signs of ageing only affect one gender. But thankfully, the conversation is opening up, and more men are sharing their experiences of getting older, revealing how they are handling the fine lines and wrinkles that inevitably show up.

Men are no strangers to cosmetic procedures

Believe it or not, men receiving cosmetic procedures is not a new trend – the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that in the past 20 years, there has been a whopping 99% increase in men receiving injectables such as dermal fillers. More surprisingly, the UK is the world’s fastest-growing filler market, with an estimated value of £1bn a year. However, what is new, is that more male influencers, celebrities and personalities are becoming transparent about their use of such treatments, making it socially acceptable, mainstream and much less stigmatised.

This liberating societal shift is further pushed by advancing non-surgical cosmetic treatments that are more affordable, accessible and convenient than surgical options. All these factors have led to men of all ages embracing a plethora of treatments to boost their confidence, youth and wellbeing without feeling judged or embarrassed.

‘Zoom boom’ leads to rise in injectables

What’s more, the demand for cosmetic treatments among men was exacerbated by the lockdown measures as a result of the pandemic. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons coined the phrase  ‘Zoom boom’ in reference to long online meetings where many people were forced to confront their own ageing faces.

UK plastic surgeons reported that in 2020 there was a 70% rise in men requesting video consultations for injectable anti-ageing treatments. Video calls forced many to take a long hard look at their wrinkles, sagging faces and dark eye circles. This then prompted a rush to reverse the signs of ageing with dermal fillers and Botulinum toxin injections surging in demand.

Men are owning their ageing

A year after the Zoom boom, men are starting to own how they age and are looking for newer, more advanced anti-ageing technologies that are non-invasive. It is in stark contrast to a decade or so ago when the market was saturated with surgical cosmetic treatments. Today, this market still exists, but it is not as popular as before. According to Statista, the top five surgical procedures among UK men in 2020 were rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), otoplasty (ear correction) and breast reduction.

Welcome to a new age of non-surgical procedures: Radio frequency

The male cosmetic market is shifting yet again as radio frequency (RF) treatments are rapidly rising in popularity. These treatments include state-of-the-art devices that use radio waves to heat your skin and slow down the ageing process by encouraging the production of proteins, namely collagen and elastin. These proteins are naturally produced by the body but the production of both decreases as early as age 20. Once this happens, the skin starts showing visible signs of ageing, and the youthful glow starts to dim.

Fortunately, radio frequency treatments are proven to restore radiance to the skin and can greatly improve its texture, tone and firmness. Beyond aesthetics, these treatments can help with certain skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and dermatitis. The current requirement for most men is to look ‘tweaked’ without needing surgery. For this reason, RF treatments are quickly taking over the market as it achieves head-turning improvements without the daunting experience of going under the knife.

Married At First Sight’s, Jordon Mundell, shares his journey

One famous man who is vocal about his anti-ageing procedures is Jordon Mundell – a previous star on the smash hit show Married At First Sight (MAFS) UK. The 28-year-old Personal Trainer from Cardiff, Wales, explained in a press release that he receives Botulinum toxin injections to treat the stubborn lines on his forehead. The procedures are done at Cardiff Cosmetic Clinic, run by the reputable Aesthetics Doctor, Dr Raj. The doc is renowned for his non-invasive yet highly effective anti-ageing treatments throughout Wales.

This is what the Jordon had to say about his cosmetic treatment journey as a man:

“As a society, it is socially acceptable for women to undergo plastic surgery and non-invasive aesthetic procedures, but if you flip the gender, most men are afraid to admit they receive these treatments in fear of judgement and stigmatisation.

“By opening the conversation around my anti-ageing procedures, I hope to help change the narrative around cosmetic treatments for men and make it known that we as a gender also struggle with getting older. In the end, I want the men who read this to know that it is normal to get a little youth back into your appearance, and it shouldn’t be something to be embarrassed about.”
